Artist Statement for Illuminated Portraiture Series
Illuminated PortraitureMeghan Oona Clifford
Artist Statement, 2012
Human faces are the medium for soul-meetings. Archetypal expressions offer gateways into our deeper, inner realms. This series uniquely blends modern graphite portraits with stylized abstractions in acrylic and paint marker. The faces read like a story woven of shadow and light, chosen to illustrate a transcendent human moment.
Merging meticulous realism with intricate, flowing paintwork explores how our apparent reality connects with alternate realms of emotion, meaning, subconsciousness, and true essence. Through precise craftsmanship and inspired insight, I offer these experiences of awareness to uplift and enjoy.

A Glimpse
Dream, 1.28.12 I'm walking by myself through the cemetery, alongside the fence. I lay down because I don't want oncomers to see me. Later I hear I've been followed, which I find creepy.Through the secret forest, I can't see the path at first but I know it's there, right behind the bushes. I enter to see an ancient structure of paths, interwoven like a intricate labyrinth shaped like a half top of a chapel but flat, on the ground, the point at the top is where you continue on...
I meet my sister and family inside the forest, at the most beautiful, calm, turquoise blue lake ever. We're swimming, and super happy. A door to the other dimension opens and my family encourages me to hop up this cliff to meet my lover there.
He's in a food market with my cousins and we’re all trying to take the bus, but we get on the wrong way at first, but it’s a crazy dangerous bus, and we’re sliding around... Later at a Phish show, but my mom’s there, having a hard time hearing/understanding, and I try to watch her, the horns are there, and instead of a dark dance party, the theater’s all lit up, and there are professional dancers... Isaac gives my a sombrero, but i don’t think it’s flattering so I leave it. I have to explain things to some more of my family, but the horns are incredible!!!!!
