This Week's Obsession: Paper Patterns from Florence

Years ago I had the delight to traipse down the cobbled streets of Spain with my dear family, perusing artisan shops all day. We stumbled into a paper shop, featuring the famous marbled and antique paper prints of Italy. We came away with several keepsakes, one of which, 18 years later, remains by my bedside, as always. It's a (heavyweight) paper box which holds my dearest charms -- a birth rattle, seashells from Hawaii, a notebook of Phish shows I've seen, old jewelry from old boyfriends, and the like.

Here's a sample of the antique paper patterns, which I love, for their flashes of gold leaf, the swirling motion, and the rich yet gentle color palettes. I only wish we had the full story of who created the original patterns and why!
